Apple Designs Retractable Legs to Improve MacBook Pro Cooling

Similar solutions have been used by other laptop manufacturers for several years.

Patently Apple has found several patents for mechanisms to improve ventilation on the MacBook Pro. Among them are several different mechanisms for retractable legs that can lift the bottom of the laptop above the table, but at the same time they will not stick out and get in the way during transportation.

The company is considering different options: with electric motors, and pneumatic drives, and simply manually folding legs – the main thing is that they are at least 3.8 mm in height. One of the most interesting designs is with a spring and a lever that is set in motion by an openable lid (picture above).

The idea of raising one side of the laptop to improve airflow was not just Apple’s brainchild. For several years now, HP, ASUS, MSI and other manufacturers have used approximately the same hinge mechanism, combined with an elongated laptop lid.

Instead of separate legs, Apple can use entire drawers with ventilation grilles. The patent describes a system in which a laptop registers the position of the air intake and increases the operating frequency and TDP of the processor under better cooling conditions.
